A utility sink can be installed in a laundry room for many reasons. It could be because you want to have an additional sink, or it could be that the plumbing in your home is too old and leaky.

Whatever the reason may be, installing a new sink is not something that should scare you away. With this easy guide on how to install a utility sink in your laundry room, you will need little effort at all to get started.

How to Install a Utility Sink in a Laundry Room

Installing a utility sink in a laundry room can be a great way to add some extra convenience and functionality to your home. It's a pretty simple process, but there are a few steps you'll need to take into account:

Measure the Space

Before you cut out any holes for the sink and plumbing, be sure to measure your space. Make a mark where the sink will be, then measure from that spot to each of the surrounding walls. You'll need to cover these spots with plywood or another backing for the drain board and lip of the sink.

Measurement for Drainage

Measure the height of your sink, than measure out where you'll need to drill holes for the drain pipe. This will be one inch above the bottom edge of your sink. Make sure they are level.

Cut Out a Hole

The hole for the sink is typically a little bigger than the actual sink. I just used a circular saw to cut out my hole, but you can use whatever method works best.

Cut the Existing Drain Pipe

Cut out enough of the existing drain pipe to make room for the new sink plumbing. Make sure that there are no pipes or wires behind it, then seal up any gaps with some silicone caulk or caulk/sealant mix.

Level the Sink and Attach It to the Wall

Attach the sink to the wall using some wood or concrete screws, than check its level. Adjust as needed.

Add Y-Fitting to Sink and Washer Drainage

Identify Water Sources

You'll need to identify where you can attach your faucet. The best place is usually the side of the sink, but if this isn't possible you can likely have it installed on top of the laundry room counter.

Connect the Hoses to the Sink

Connect one side of the hose to your faucet, than attach it to the Y-fitting coming out of the wall. Connect the other end of this hose with the Y-fitting attached to your sink drainpipe.

Final Step

Add a deep sink basin or extra countertop space to your laundry room with a utility sink. You'll appreciate it every time you do the laundry.

Conclusion

Utility sinks typically come in a variety of sizes and can be installed almost anywhere, but the laundry room is one of the more popular places to install them. Once you’ve determined which approach would work better for your situation, follow these steps. For either option make sure to ask yourself what size drain line diameter needs to be installed before purchasing materials from a hardware store.
